Like
many travelers we are captivated by Mediterranean style, particularly
the architecture and interiors of homes in the South of France and
Spain.
This attraction is based on several elements endemic to this region
- the most important being the relationship between interior and
exterior spaces, which seem to form an organic whole. Because of
the heat and sun in the Mediterranean, antique dwellings often had
relatively few and small windows, but the stone used in the walls
of the house is continued in the exterior hardscaping.
The close relationship between interior and exterior spaces brings
the garden inside and the comforts of the salon on the terrace.
This seamless flowing of interior and exterior is often transitioned
with vine-covered pergolas or tented patio rooms.
The play of sun and shade created in the garden rooms is particularly
appealing and restful.
Organic building materials seem another pleasure of Mediterranean
homes -- old stone exterior walls, plaster interior walls, terra
cotta and limestone floors, hand painted and glazed decorative tiles
in kitchens and bathrooms.
MAISON DÉCOR MEDITERRANEE magazine features the magic of
this region and can be often found at better bookstores in the U.S.
